Resources for the Study of Language, Literature, and Composition
Many of the following listings were
taken from Chapter 18 of English
OnLine: A Student's Guide to the Internet and World Wide Web, by Eric
Crump and Nick Carbone, published by Houghton
Mifflin Company, 1996. This book is an excellent guide to the use of
the Internet and to Internet sources. Other sources of information
about
Internet sites of interest to English students are Internet Research
Companion by Geoffrey W. McKim,
published by Que Education &
Training,
1996, and T. H. E.[Technology in
Higher Education] Journal's
"Road
Map to the World Wide Web."
The T.H.E. listed Web sites are
accessible through T.H.E.
Online. This site is very comprehensive; it includes a section on
grants.
The following Internet sites will help
in conducting research on
topics
in literature, the English language, and areas of composition:
Internet Search Engines
- Alta Vista
Indexes the text of Internet materials. If you get too many entries,
go to the Advanced
Search option.
- MetaCrawler
Uses several other search services, including AltaVista, to compile
a list of sources containing the search terms.
- Excite
Very good at finding large numbers of references; a good complement
to AltaVista.
- HotBot
Also does a thorough job of covering sites.
