As with the "My Room" example, the "My Sister" gives us the Invention step and sets up the Arrangement and Style steps. Since you won't deliver your writing as a speech, you don't need to worry about Memory and Delivery for this class.

What the handout calls "Controlling Statements," I call a Thesis if the sentence governs a whole essay, or a Topic Sentence if it governs a paragraph. Thesis statements and topic sentences have the same form, and a very similar purpose.

For this exercise, I'll divide the class into 5 groups and give each group one of the topic sentences. Each group will work together on writing a paragraph that fits the topic sentence. Use the information that goes with the topic sentence; leave the rest out. Arrange the sentence in the paragraph in the order that the topic sentence sets up. Once you finish your group's paragraph, upload it to the forum on Moodle & read the other 4 paragraphs. Together they show the difference that the topic sentence makes on how you write your paragraph.
