The Melian Dialogue

We see the conflict between hard power and soft power here. Athens had the 'soft' power of its ideals, its example, its system that promised freedom to those who followed it. It also has the 'hard' power of its army and its navy. Further, as an aspiring empire, it had interests that sometime ran counter to its values, as in this case, when it wanted a democracy to follow a policy the majority definitely did not want. This conflict has a strong parallel to the USA, which has instigated coups against many democratically elected governments that disagreed with our policies.
