Answer any five of the following essay questions. Each question is worth 20% of the grade. Answer in complete sentences. I shall grade writing skills as well as content.

 

  1. Write down the ten lines of poetry or prose that you memorized. Follow these lines with a well-written paragraph discussing the importance of this selection.
  2. Compare and contrast the Enlightenment Era and the Romantic/Transcendental Era.
  3. Analyze Huck Finn's development toward maturity according to the Joseph Campbell diagram we used in class. Define the stages of maturity and identify which events in the story correspond to those stages.
  4. Compare and contrast the grounds for resistance to government in Jefferson and Thoreau.
  5. Define and discuss the five points of Calvinism.
  6. Discuss the meaning of "all men are created equal" in Jefferson, the Seneca Falls Declaration, Lincoln, du Bois, and King.
  7. Discuss the relationship between myth and science in "Dynamo and the Virgin," which is a chapter in The Education of Henry Adams.
  8. POETRY INTERPRETATION
    1. Paraphrase the following five excerpts from Emily Dickinson into standard English, using her terms as much as possible.
    2. Explain what they mean.
