The Cover Letter
The most important tip is, of course, to always attach a cover letter
to a resume. It is not only expected, but also a great chance to
highlight your skills.
Top 10 Tips
1. Use quality, conservative paper, preferably that matches your envelopes and resume.
2. Address your letter to an individual (with title) rather than to an anonymous Madame, Sir, or To Whom it May Concern. If you do not have a name or title, call or look up the company in a database or trade directory.
3. Tailor the content to the position. Avoid using a form letter.
4. Do not simply repeat information from your resume. Highlight relative experiences, show your enthusiasm, and be positive.
5. Focus on the self-interest of the employer.
6. Avoid humor. The employer may not think it is too funny.
7. Try not to reach resume-speak overkill.
8. Always check your letter for speelling and grammars.(just kidding)
spelling and grammar.
9. Keep copies of your letters. This keeps you from sounding confused when employers call.
10. REMEMBER TO SIGN THE LETTER.
An unsigned letter shows carelessness.
Cover Letter Contents
Your cover letter should be about three-to-four paragraphs long and
single spaced on one page.
• Paragraph 1: Employers receive hundreds of letters, so open your letter with a strong statement. Tell why you are writing, where you saw the ad, who mentioned the job, etc.
• Paragraph 2-3: The middle paragraphs are key, since they can help you stand out from the next candidate. Use the center of your letter to arouse the employer’s curiosity. Highlight special accomplishments and show your enthusiasm, but do not merely repeat your resume. Explain how your qualifications and the company’s needs are a good match.
• Paragraph 4: Here is where you give closure and make a specific request for an interview. State when you will be available and how you can be reached. Indicate if you will follow up with a phone call to arrange a mutually convenient time to meet or talk on the phone. Thank the employer for his time and consideration.
• DON’T FORGET TO SIGN THE LETTER!
