Tech's robot builders take to
the tube this weekend
-
dtucker
Weekend showings of “Robot
Rivals” on the Do-It-Yourself Network will showcase Louisiana Tech
competing against Southern Utah in a robot-building contest.
The competition can be seen today, May 23, at both 8 p.m. and 11
p.m.; Saturday at 9 p.m. and midnight; and Sunday at 6 p.m.
Team members are Nick Tullos, Benton; David Briscoe, New Iberia; and
Louis Landry, Slidell. The team represents a host of Tech students,
including team alternate Mangilal Agarwal of India, who helped prepare
for the timed competition. Ben Choi, an
assistant professor in computer science, helped oversee the team’s
preparation.
The team’s assignment: Build a robot that can
climb nine steps and break a confetti-filled balloon. Besides basic
supplies and tools, the team will get a surprise household object to
tear down for parts. The more parts used, the more points and the
more time the team gets. Previous surprise objects have included a
sewing machine. |

The series producer said designs Tech submitted had an edge over some
designs he reviewed. “The good thing about what Louisiana Tech gave us
was it was really simple,” DIY’s Larsen Jay said. “Some of our teams
overthink it or neglect to look at the whole picture.”
Les Guice, dean of the College of Engineering and Science, praised
Choi and the team members for their work. “We are very proud of their
efforts and look forward to their building off this to do even better
next time,” he said. “This is really a terrific learning experience that
greatly expands what they get in a traditional class.”
