Materials Science and Engineering: An Introduction, 5th Edition, William Callister, John Wiley & Sons, New York, 2000.

Other basic material science books available in the library would also provide the needed background reading for understanding some topics.

VIDEO CLIPS:Short video clips will be shown throughout the quarter to supplement the lectures. These video clips are available from the following source: Materials Science - A Multimedia Approach, John C. Russ, PWS Publishing Company, Boston, e-mail: info@pws.com, ISBN: 0 534 95736 6

GRADING:

Grades for this course will be based on homework, laboratory reports, and a laboratory presentation. The value of each component is shown in the course schedule.

GRADING SCALE:

A 90 -100% (highest degree of excellence)
B 80 - 89% (superior)
C 70 - 79% (average)
D 60 - 69% (minimum quality of work to receive course credit)
F < 60   (failure)

Note: The lower limit in each grade range may be lowered slightly such that the division between letter grades occur at any large gaps in the grade spectrum. This adjustment will be determined only after the final averages are computed and may or may not alter the grade scale.
