ENGR 122 Design Competition – Spring 2003

Don’t Break the Egg

Situation:

You need to deliver a raw egg across a 20 foot distance, but you must do so in a minimum amount of time and without breaking the egg that’s located at the front of your vehicle. You see, there is a cinder block wall at the end of the 20 feet.

Specific criteria:

1. The egg you are to carry must be a raw, Grade A large egg mounted in the front of the vehicle with 3/4" of the egg exposed beyond the front of the vehicle. The position of the egg defines the front of the vehicle.

2. There can be nothing placed in front of the exposed end of the egg.

3. The goal is for the vehicle to travel 20 feet. This distance is from the forward edge of the egg to the cinder block wall waiting at the finish line

4. Any visible crack constitutes a broken egg.

5. No combustion based propulsion systems are allowed.

6. There can be no interaction with the vehicle after it is launched. For example, no remote control or tethers.

7. The maximum allowable length of the vehicle is 18 inches.

8. Maximum allowable budget is $50.00. This does not include the cost of any tools you may have to purchase or the value of any donated materials.

Competition:

Race: You will be racing against other teams, and performance will be based on time and distance. The time will begin when your vehicle leaves the start line and will end when the vehicle ceases to move or when it covers the 20 feet without breaking the egg. If the egg is broken at the end of the race, your team is eliminated from the race. When the vehicles are placed on the starting line, a mark will be placed on the egg marking the point closest to the cinder block wall. The distance to be measured for scoring in the competition will be from the mark on the egg to the cinder block wall.

There will be a piece of paper taped to the floor extending one foot in front of the cinder block wall. If your egg breaks, the paper will hopefully catch most of the egg.

The front of the vehicle must face the cinder block wall for at least 18 feet.

You will be racing in lanes that are 24 inches wide.

Design: Voting will also take place for the best design. Remember to sell a product it must look good as well as perform the assigned task.
