Development of these tools was sponsored by the Louisiana Board of Regents Fellow of Excellence in Engineering Education grant "Mathematical Support for an Integrated Engineering Curriculum". Some support also came from a teacher in-service training grant from the Louisiana Systemic Initiatives program (LaSIP).

Demonstration/Exploration tools
centlimexc95.xls

(about 1MB)

A tool to investigate and visualize
The connection between probability density function and cumulative distribution function.
How a random sample population is determined by the underlying probability distribution.
The distribution of sample means for a given population of values.
The distribution of sample standard deviations for a given population of values.
modified GC.xls  A graphing calculator in EXCEL that allows you to choose how many points to plot. (Written by T. Bailiff and T. Haynie.)
histogram to density function.xls A modification of the Bailiff-Haynie graphing calculator which allows to demonstrate the transition from a histogram (discrete data) to a density function (continuous data).

Data files
data1, data2, data3, data4, data5, data6, data7, data8 Each data file contains 200 random numbers in cells B101 to B300.
Data generators
expdata.xls   Generates 200 samples from an exponential distribution with given parameter.
unifdata.xls Generates 200 samples from a uniform distribution on the interval from 0 to 11.
sampmeandist.xls Early prototype of centlimexc95.xls; can be used to generate approximately normal data.
Self assessment
how well do you study math.xls This self-assessment, implemented by Hilda Black, originally a questionnaire by Richard Manning Smith (from his book "Mastering Mathematics: How To Be A Great Math Student.") rates study habits based on questions asked to the student

An assessment tool
Item Analysis Template This is a tool to perform item analysis on test scores. Sample sets of test data are given.
BAP IV talk These are power point slides for a talk on item analysis at the Best Assessment Processes IV conference at Rose-Hulman in April 2001.
