Dr. Upali Siriwardane received his B.S. degree at the University of Sri Lanka, Sri Lanka, in 1976, M.S. degree at the Concordia University, Montreal, Quebec,Canada in 1981, and Ph.D. degree at the Ohio State University, Columbus, Ohio, U.S.A in 1985. As a graduate student , with Dr. Peter H. Bird  and Dr. Sheldon G. Shore, he was involved in the single crystal X-ray diffraction experiments and synthesis of transition metal cluster compounds. In 1986, He joined Dr. Narayan S. Hosmane at Southern Methodist University as a Postdoctoral Fellow and in 1987 he became staff crystallographer. In1989 he joined Louisiana Tech University as an Assistant Professor of Chemistry. He was promoted to a Associate Professor  in 1993 and to a Full Professor of Chemistry in 2007.

My research is concerned with the synthesis and characterization of inorganic and organometallic materials. The areas of interest to me include, preparation group 14 (Si,Ge, Sn) pyrrolides and porphyrins, preparation of novel zeolite, preparation of FT-,  WGS- , Biodiesel-catalysts based on Alumina, and the characterization techniques  powder X-ray diffraction, BET, DTA, TGA, SEM,  AFM  techniques for material characterizations. A variety of methods are employed to prepare the materials for study, including vacuum line and inert atmosphere synthesis, sol-gel chemistry, aqueous and non-aqueous hydrothermal routes. Other characterization techniques, such as multinuclear NMR, IR, and UV spectroscopy, and single, are used for the identification and structural characterization of the compounds produced. The information obtained from such structural studies can be used to aid our understanding the material properties. My teaching interests are in General Chemistry, Inorganic Chemistry, and Materials Chemistry courses.
