Article Review-Instructions  

1. Your assignment is to review an approved article that discusses some aspect of environmental science. You are provided with a pre-approved list of articles that can be accessed on the class World Wide Web site shown below. You may use any one of these articles without pre-approval. The student is encouraged to find his or her own article on some topic of environmental science that is of interest to the student. Selection of an article not on this list requires the approval of one of the instructors.

2. The article review is to be a typed, double spaced paper of two to three pages (500 to 750 words), stapled in the upper left corner (no folders).

3. Your task is to read an article and write a short summary and critique of the article.

4. Each student should conform to the following format. Deviation from this format will result in the lowering of your grade.

a. Citation - State the author, year, title, magazine or periodical, volume:page numbers. For example:

Rosenthal, G.A., 1986. "The Chemical Defenses Of Higher Plants". Scientific American, 254:79-86.

b. Review

At least 1 1/2 pages of your review should be used to review or summarize the article. You will need to read and mentally digest your article so that you are able to discuss it in your own words. Simply copying sentences or phrases out of the article is considered plagiarism unless quotation marks (") are inserted at the beginning and end of someone else's words. Plagiarism in your review will result in 0 points for your effort. Your review should go beyond statements like: "The authors talked about how vascular plants exude toxic chemicals into the root zone." Don't tell me what they wrote about in general terms - be specific and provided sufficient detail so that I will learn something.

c. Critique

This section is your own reaction to the information and conclusion of the article. You are free to have any opinion that makes sense to you and you will not be penalized for stating your opinion even if I do not agree with you. You will be penalized for having a critique that shows a lack of thought on your part. For example, saying the article was very good may be a nice start. You must, however, back this type of statement up with some reasoning on your part. You are also free to disagree with the author(s).
