Louisiana Tech University..........................................................................................Spring 2002
School of Architecture

William T Willoughby, Assistant Professor............................................................................................................section 01

Course Introduction
In the Fall of 2000, the Director of the School of Architecture designated an internal "center" and thus took the first steps at formalizing the community design assistance that the School of Architecture has offered in the past. Out of this decision, the Community Design Assistance Center (CDAC) was formed, with Assistant Professor William T Willoughby serving as coordinator. Since its inception, the CDAC has assisted (and continues to assist), with the help of Louisiana Tech University students, the following community groups:

These kinds of community outreach projects give tangible vision to economic development and change. This work makes Louisiana Tech University a good neighbor by contributing to the rural and urban communities of North Louisiana. Through the Community Design Assistance Center, the School of Architecture can assist in fulfilling some of the community and civic obligation of the University toward specific projects of concern to the people of North Louisiana. The net effect and mission of the CDAC is to assist by envisioning design issues and promoting considerate economic development of the region - which in turn will have a positive effect on the rest of the state, and hopefully, the nation.

The Community Assistance Design Center at the School of Architecture involves the efforts of students, and cannot provide or replace professional land development, planning services, or complete professional architectural services. Our nonprofit involvement is to assist the communities of North Louisiana in envisioning the physical growth, design, development and quality of their built and grown environment.

Grading Policy
All students begin with a "C" average in the course. Each student will be given a task to complete in a reasonable time frame (all tasks and time frames will be agreed upon mutually by faculty member and student). Adherence to the timely completion of the assigned task will result in the receipt of one merit point. The receipt of two merit points will raise a student's grade one letter (e.g. from a "C" to a "B"). Failure to complete the task within the agreed upon time frame, or poor quality work (as judged by the faculty member) will result in the receipt of one demerit point. The receipt of two demerit points will lower a student's grade one letter (e.g. from a "C" to a "D"). All work will be apportioned depending on the amount of credit hours (1 or 3) the student the course has been taken for.

Special Note: The instructor reserves the right to modify or change any aspect of this course including evaluation criteria, deadlines, and course schedule at any time and for any reason. You will be adequately informed any modifications or changes to this course prior to those modification or changes taking effect. Course attendance is mandatory. Short field trips outside of class time may occur and should be expected as part of this course -- times for meetings outside will be coordinated and agreed upon between all involved parties. Being later than five minutes to the beginning of class (unexcused) a total of two (2) times will equal one (1) unexcused absence. Chronic tardiness, including leaving early (more than six (6) times) will lead to failure in this course. Excused absences must be submitted to your to me in writing (in three days of your absence) and include evidence of the specific hardship.

Cell Phones
Cell phone use will not be allowed in this course. If you have a cellular phone or a pager, please make sure that you turn it off in class -- or at least put it on 'vibrate' mode if you are expecting an important call (in such cases, the instructor should be informed of the circumstance before class). No calls should be placed from cell phones during class time, and no calls should be received during class time. Interruptions in class, including distractions (gestures and noises), talking between students, and general inattentiveness during lecture or seminar will not be tolerated. If the attention of the class as a whole or the instructor is interrupted during class time due to cell phone, pager use, or any such distractions -- the instructor may expel you from the class and count the expulsion as an absence.
