COURSE DESCRIPTION

2003-2004 Catalog Description of Math 099:

Math 099: Preparation for College Mathematics. 0-4-4. Required if Mathematics ACT score is less than 18, or Mathematics SAT is less than 430, unless a passing score is achieved on Placement Exam A. Real numbers; exponents; polynomials and factoring; algebraic fractions; linear equations and inequalities; quadratic equations; graphing; radicals.

 

 Important information about taking Math 099 as an on-line course:


Math 099 over Internet has several benefits for the student:

  • There are no on-campus attendance requirements beyond having to take the midquarter and final examinations on the Tech campus, Ruston, LA;
  • All of the class material is available to you through the Web site;
  • Communication between the teacher and student occurs by using the message center in ALEKS, by email, by telephone, by FAX, or by personal conferences or a combination of all of these methods.

But, this on-line course may present some difficulties for you, the student:

  • You cannot be passive when taking this course; you must be actively involved in accessing the Web site, keeping up with the assignments given in the Weekly Syllabus, and you MUST make a point of asking questions using the message center in ALEKS or some other means. 
  • It will take as much or more of your time to take an on-line class, as opposed to a class that meets on the Tech campus. YOU must decide on and set aside regular times you will dedicate to work on the course. You will be required to spend at least three hours per week working and making progress in ALEKS.

Technical Requirements

 

Windows 95/98/NT/2000/ME/XP: Pentium PC 133Mhz, 32MB of RAM, Internet connection of at least 28K, and Internet Explorer 4.0 and later, or Netscape Communicator 4.5 to 4.8, or Netscape 6.0 and later, or AOL 5.0 and later.

Macintosh: MacOS X or higher, PowerMac or iMac, 32MB of RAM, Internet connection of at least 28K, and Netscape Communicator 6.0 and later, or Internet Explorer 5.2 and later. MacOS 7.6 or higher, PowerMac or iMac, 32MB of RAM, Internet connection of at least 28K, and Netscape Communicator 4.5 to 4.8.

Notes:

1.      Your browser should be configured with Java enabled. Both Netscape and Internet Explorer usually ship with Java. You can also install Sun Microsystems' JavaTM VM. The minimum requirement is the Java VM version 1.4.1 and later. It is available free from http://java.sun.com/getjava/download.html.

2.      Most dialup and broadband online services, such as AOL, Cable and DSL, provide access to the browser types mentioned. Contact your internet service provider for further information.

You will also have to download the ALEKS plug-in.

On Campus Computer Availability

There are two computer labs open to students in Wyly Tower. Also, the computer lab in GTM 165 is open to all Tech students. There are many other computer labs used in the individual academic units of Louisiana Tech University.

A scientific calculator is needed for some homework. Calculators will not be allowed on exams.

60% or higher on the final exam and below 70% average overall
