This syllabus must be copied and studied so that  you will have access to the information necessary to complete the assignments in this course.

The Weekly Syllabus will be your daily guide after you begin work in the course.

Course Prerequisites: Math ACT score greater than or equal to 22, or Math SAT score greater than or equal to 520, or Placement by Exam

Course Goals: To understand and apply the following concepts: rational exponents; radical expressions; complex numbers; miscellaneous equations; inequalities; functions; conics; graphs; inverse, exponential, logarithmic functions; applications; system of equations.

COURSE TEXTBOOK AND SUPPLEMENTS

 NOTE: DO NOT PURCHASE THE MATH 101 TEXTBOOK.  Purchase the textbook listed below.

Textbook: Math 100 College Algebra Louisiana Tech University by Dugopolski, packaged with the  ALEKS web-based tutorial. The textbook can be purchased through the Louisiana Tech Bookstore. Link to Louisiana Tech Bookstore--to order book online.

 Calculator: A scientific or graphing calculator is required for this course. If you will be taking calculus or statistics courses in the future, the TI-82 or equivalent is recommended.
 ALEKS: The ALEKS learning and tutorial web based program will be packaged with the textbook. YOUR ALEKS COURSE CODE IS G 3 3 G V -X C X P 4 . Your individual access code is inside the back cover of the ALEKS User's Guide and can be used only one time. The ALEKS User’s Guide provides step-by-step instructions for registering with ALEKS.  BLACKBOARD WEB SITE: If you are enrolled in the Math 101 internet course at Louisiana Tech University for the current quarter, you will be enrolled in Dr. Hanna's College Algebra  Course on the Louisiana Tech University Blackboard site. This site will contain some of the online quizzes, your grades will be posted on this site, and several tutoring sources are located on this site. The various tutoring sources located on the Blackboard site are briefly described below.

Video Lectures are video files presenting lectures on the step-by-step solutions to selected problems found in the exercise set at the end of the section.

e-Professor provides a very detailed audio/visual explanation of the type problem contained in each section followed by additional practice problems. 

Practice Problems  can be used to practice the types of problems in each section, and an interactive step-by-step guided solution to each problem is available.

Chapter Tests are available for each chapter and Self Tests are available which allow you to choose specific sections in each chapter to test yourself on.

LOUISIANA TECH UNIVERSITY STUDENT COMPUTER LAB ACCESS AND USE

There are two computer labs open to students in Wyly Tower. Also, the computer lab in GTM 165 is open to all Tech students. There are many other computer labs used in the individual academic units of Louisiana Tech University.

COURSE GUIDELINES AND EXPECTATIONS FOR MATH 101 -- INTERNET

 

Operating Rules for this Class:

It is necessary that you check your E-mail and the ALEKS Message Center at least once a day and that you keep in contact with the teacher.

By the first class day, email Dr. Hanna to guarantee that she has your current e-mail address. If that address changes, email the new address.

To receive credit for the course, all assigned work must be satisfactorily completed.  
bullet Assignments are due by the date specified in the Syllabus (or on a new date, if that date is changed).
bullet To keep up-to-date on your progress in this course and to complete all assignments, consult the Weekly Syllabus for All Weekly Assignments, Quizzes, and Due Dates.

Since there are no regular class meetings or lectures, it is necessary that each student complete the assignments and bring up any questions or problems by using the ALEKS message center, by personal visits, by telephone, or by email.

Your textbook and the Internet materials are your major resources for this course. You should read them over, mark them up, and make notes about important points. You must become very familiar with all the material included about Math 101 on this Internet site. Printing out this material and keeping it in an indexed notebook would be an easy way to have access to all of it.
Grade Determination Procedure:

ALEKS Progress and Weekly Quizzes = 50

Midquarter Exam = 100

Final Exam = 100

Note: Problems assigned from the textbook must be completed before taking the Weekly Quizzes. These problems will not be turned in because they can be checked using the answers in the back of the textbook. Any questions about these problems can be answered by using the ALEKS Message Center, by faxing the work to me, by telephone, or by office visit.

Final Grading Scale:

  90%-100% = A
      80%-89% = B

   70%-79% = C
      60%-69% = D

 BELOW 60% = F
