Introduction

Over the past forty years or so, three general classes, or paradigms, of programming languages have emerged. These paradigms include the imperative paradigm, the functional paradigm, and the logical paradigm. A language is classified as belonging to a particular paradigm based on the programming features it supports. Imperative languages are, by far, the most popular type of programming languages. This lab continues the exploration of the imperative paradigm, by introducing the Watson Imperative Language (WIL). WIL is a simple, general-purpose, imperative programming language that is quite similar to Pascal.

This lab will allow you to explore some of the programming constructs used in imperative languages. Just like the other Watson Labs, this lab contains many activities, or examples of program code from the text, for you to run so that you may gain a better understanding of the WIL.
