“Literature is not a
place for conformists.”
Welcome to Journalism 275: People and Events! In this class, we will discuss various column writing techniques, how to avoid sensationalism in your columns, types of columns, how to write descriptively and clearly, how to use specifics instead of generalizations, and editing for various markets.
To the left, you will see links for your syllabus, three instructional units, and a contact page. The first class assignment is due June 3. If you have any questions, please contact Judith Roberts, instructor, at jroberts@latech.edu.
The aim of this class is to teach the future journalists of the world to use their experiences to write in a variety of columnist capacities. Students should learn to write columns from 500 words long to 2,000 words, to draw inspiration from other writers, to use related community activities as motivation, and to write for the Web.
This course is designed to let you work at your own speed. I expect that we will communicate frequently via e-mail, phone, Facebook, and even Skype if you wish. This class is meant for you to enhance your writing and technological skills.
I hope you will enjoy this class! I want it to be engaging, enlightening, and entertaining! The more you participate, the more we can share knowledge!
