Course Prerequisites: Knowledge and ability to apply arithmetic properties of integers and rational numbers. Math 099, developmental math, is required before enrolling in any other math or statistics course at Louisiana Tech if Math ACT score is less than 18 or Math SAT is less than 430 unless a passing score is achieved on Placement Exam A or college credit has been earned for a math course equivalent to Math 099 or higher.
Course Goals: To study mathematical concepts to prepare students for College Mathematics. Topics covered include arithmetic operations with real numbers, algebra fundamentals through operations with polynomials, rational expressions, solving linear equations, solving quadratic equations by factoring, solving inequalities, and simplifying radicals.
COURSE TEXTBOOK AND SUPPLEMENTS
Textbook: Math 099 Preparation for College Mathematics Louisiana Tech University by Dugopolski, packaged with the ALEKS web-based tutorial.
The textbook can be purchased through the Louisiana Tech Bookstore. Link to Louisiana Tech Bookstore--to order book online.
Calculator: A scientific calculator is needed for some homework. Calculators will not be allowed on exams.

ALEKS: The ALEKS LEARNING AND TUTORIAL WEB BASED PROGRAM WILL BE PACKAGED WITH THE TEXTBOOK. YOUR COURSE CODE IS 3 3 P U C - P V M A M . Your individual access code is inside the back cover of the ALEKS User's Guide. The ALEKS User’s Guide provides step-by-step instructions for registering with ALEKS.
The ALEKS program will provide self paced learning and tutoring for the course and your work with the program will also determine a portion of your grade. Follow instructions in the user’s guide to LOG ON TO ANY COMPUTER HAVING THE APPROPRIATE INTERNET ACCESS. The first time you log in to ALEKS, you must use the access code which is located inside the back cover of the User's Guide and use the course code printed above. After your initial registration with ALEKS, each time you logon you will need only the login name and password assigned to you by the ALEKS system at the time you registered. To obtain adequate benefit from the ALEKS tutorial program, you should use the program THREE HOURS EACH WEEK from the beginning of the course. If you happen not to pass the course, you must have used ALEKS THREE HOURS EACH WEEK from the beginning of the course to qualify for the ALEKS guarantee and receive ALEKS free when you repeat the course.

(1). Under Syllabus, you may access the following:
(a). Math 099 Internet Course Syllabus Coordinated With ALEKS from which you can download and print a section-by-section guide for the course coordinated with ALEKS.
(b). Section…(a specific section from the textbook) which contains an on-line copy of all sections of the textbook, a link to the free online tutorial services and audio/visual tutorial, and other supplements.
(c). Some of the weekly quizzes you are required to complete are also accessible from this site.
(2). Under Student Registration you may access the procedure for registering on the Math 099 PageOut site. This registration is required in order to enable taking the online quizzes and to access the online gradebook. You will choose your own userid and password.
(3). Under Gradebook you may access all of your quiz and exam grades for the course after you have completed your student registration in (2) above.
LOUISIANA TECH UNIVERSITY STUDENT COMPUTER LAB ACCESS AND USE
There are two computer labs open to students in Wyly Tower. Also, the computer lab in GTM 165 is open to all Tech students. There are many other computer labs used in the individual academic units of Louisiana Tech University.

Since there will be no regular class meetings or lectures, it is necessary that each student complete the assignments and bring up any questions or problems by using the ALEKS message center, by personal visits, by telephone, or by email. | ||
Your textbook and the Internet materials are your major resources for this course. You should read them over, mark them up, and make notes about important points. You must become very familiar with all the material included about Math 099 on this Internet site. Printing out this material and keeping it in an indexed notebook would be an easy way to have access to all of it. | ||

ACADEMIC MISCONDUCT
The following statement is copied from page 16 of the 2003-2004 University Catalog.
Academic misconduct at the University is determined by the faculty member, committee, or other supervisor(s) under whom such misconduct occurs. The misconduct may occur in an individual class, a comprehensive exam, a practicum, an internship, a thesis or dissertation, a research project, a multiquarter sequence of courses, or any other academically-related matter or setting. Penalties may range from dismissal from the University or an academic degree program to a failing grade or lesser penalty as determined by the faculty member, plan of study committee, or supervising authority. The student has the right to appeal the charge of academic misconduct in accordance with the Final Grade and Appeals Procedure.
ATTENDANCE REQUIREMENTS
Attendance will be recorded based on your individual login time and progress with ALEKS and the dates your individual assignments are submitted. Failure to complete 4 quizzes on time will be viewed as the equivalent of four unexcused absences in a regular class and will result in a grade of F in the course.
