Welcome to the Biomonitoring Workshop
The workshop consists of 4 separate sessions. Each Session is designed to
take about 4 hours to complete. Students who are taking this course for university
credit will be required to take 4 tests -- one at the end of each session.
Session 1
This session centers on governmental regulations concerning aquatic effluents, a brief
review of the history and purpose of the Clean Water Act, the NPDES
permitting program, and WET tests.
Session 2
Session 2 introduces covers freshwater and estuarine organisms used in EPA-approved
biomonitoring tests. This session also deals with important quality
assurance considerations and requirements in conducting bioassays.
Session 3
This session deals with the methodology and protocols followed in standardized acute
and chronic bioassays.
Session 4
This session covers the reporting of test results. It also deals with requirements
and procedures for TREs (Toxicity Reduction Evaluation) and TIEs (Toxicity Identification
Evaluation).
