Background

The two major systems of measurement are the Metric System and the English System.  The Metric System is the most common system of measurement and is a ten-based system, meaning that each subsequent measurement unit is a multiple of ten from the fundamental unit.  The English System of measurement is the common system for the United States and has no common number base such as the Metric System.  Many of the English units today are defined in terms of the Metric System due to its’ accuracy and widespread use.
