The following four search engines do a good job in searching through text to find needed key words and concepts. Since they do not cover the same exact source material, you should use several of them when doing research on a particular subject.  Also, a list of search engines is given in the section called Researching the Long Report.

• Google
Very fast; one of the most-used search engines.


• Alta Vista
Indexes the text of Internet materials. If you get too many entries, go to the  Advanced Search option.


• MetaCrawler
Uses several other search services, including AltaVista, to compile a list of sources containing the search terms.


• Excite
Very good at finding large numbers of references; a good complement to AltaVista

• Hotbot
  Does a thorough job.
  

• AskJeeves
  Very easy to use.
